Wiley X has a new model sunglass out called the WX compass. I first saw the WX compass at ICAST 2019 in the new product showcase. If you have never been to ICAST then you probably are not familiar with the “new product showcase“. The new product showcase is one section that is cornered off and manufacturers display the latest gear, apparel, and accessories, which then gets voted upon by the attendees. ICAST is just awesome.
Sunglasses are a big sore spot for me. My expensive set of Revo’s are sitting at the bottom of the Quabbin Reservoir. My Oakleys weres stolen off my chair in Mexico. Currently, I have an expensive pair of Maui Jim’s that I can’t see through. The Maui Jim’s are just too “dark” for me, I can’t even use them for driving. I just don’t like them. At one point I gave up and said that I would never spend money on sunglasses again. Then I went to ICAST……..
Wiley X WX compass sunglasses
The Wiley X WX compass sunglasses are the real deal. I walked by the Wiley X booth at ICAST and was greeted by Tanya Herrara who is the Senior Account Manager for outdoor and tactical sales. We started talking and I proceeded to tell her I saw the WZ compass shades in the new product showcase. She let me try a pair on and explained everything about them.
The WX Compass line comes with three different lens choices. You can opt for the Smoke Grey with Matte Black BLACK OPS frame, the polarized Venice gold mirror with Matte Black frame, or the Polarized Emerald Green mirror with Kryptek Neptune frame. I chose the Polarized Emerald Green mirror with the very cool Kryptek Neptune frame. I love these sunglasses.
The WX compass sunglasses are ANSI Z87.1 rated. The particular model I chose comes with the Polarized Emerald Green Mirror. According to the Wiley X website, this is an amber-tinted lens under an emerald green multi-coat mirror surface that’s specially designed to amplify color contrast and deliver high visual definition. Distinct colors and crisp acuity in all light conditions for superior visual performance. Light transmission: 14%-16% polarized.
This line of sunglasses comes with a removable facial cavity seal which is designed to keep dust, pollen, and wind from getting to your eyes. The removable cavity seal snaps in and out very easily, and it does form a nice seal around my face. I took mine off as I don’t have to worry about those kinds of environments. Being big-boned I tend to sweat a little, this cavity seal would cause my lenses to fog up.
Real-World Testing
What’s a better way to test a pair of sunglasses than sitting on a boat in the Ocean. There’s nowhere to hide and you’re in the sun all day long. That’s exactly what I did. We took a charter boat out for Striped Bass and the sunglasses did not disappoint. I completely forgot I had them on. The WX Compass sunglasses did in fact amplify color contrast and were able to deliver high visual definition. If you are like me you would think that the definition of color contrast and visual definition are sexy marketing terms to sell sunglasses. This is the first pair of sunglasses I have owned that actually do this. I am simply amazed at this, no BS here.
Final Thoughts
The WileyX WX compass sunglasses are the real deal. The Kryptek Neptune frame is sexy and the Polarized Emerald Mirror lenses are on another level. The sunglasses came in a nice clamshell case, a large cleaning cloth, and a leash cord with rubber grips. The leash cord with rubber grips is a nice thought, but I am not a fan. I wish the length was 14+ inches. I am going to cut the cord from the plastic end pieces, fashion a 14-16 inch paracord lanyard to it and then it will be perfect! Did I mention that I love these sunglasses? They are the best pair I have ever owned.
Wiley X is a veteran-owned company that was founded in 1987. Definitely check out Wiley X for your next sunglass purchases.
