I will start out by saying I love this Shimano Scorpion MGL reel. I’ve been a big fan of the Shimano Scorpion series of reels ever since I purchased one back in 1999. I’m not a Shimano fanboy, but I tend to gravitate towards the stuff that’s reliable and just plain works consistently. There’s nothing fancy about these reels, but I will take reliability over bells and whistles any day. What’s worst than having equipment issues on the water? Nothing in my opinion.
Shimano Scorpion MGL 150
I picked this reel up from JapanTackle as this is a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) reel. Back in the day you had limited options as to where you could get JDM reels, now you can get these reels anywhere, even on Amazon. I have never had an issue with JapanTackle, communication is awesome and the delivery is surprisingly quick, even coming from Japan. I will just stick with what works. Try them, you won’t be disappointed. TackleTour did a great review on the Shimano Scorpion MGL, I highly recommend you check it out. TackleTour is legit when it comes to Tackle Reviews. I have been following them for a million years. They are the true experts.
Final Thoughts
My plan is to spool this up with 40LB PowerPro which is my go to line on all my baitcasters. I don’t have a specific technique for this reel, but I’m sure it will pull multiple technique duty as I purchased the 6.2:1 model. I would love to hear your thoughts on this reel. The drag on Shimano reels sucks. No thanks! Look at Daiwa or even Abu.

While it might not be as strong as the others, it’s a proven winner. You can always upgrade the washers if you feel it’s necessary. I’m old school and use my thumb to slow down a running fish. My big fish problems. 😉
