Megabass Big Gabot

I did it, I bought a Megabass Big Gabot hollow-bodied frog. As a matter of fact, I purchased two of them. In my pursuit of the best hollow-bodied frog, I came across the Megabass Gabot Hollow bodied frog while surfing on Amazon. Surprisingly I was able to pick them up for $16.57 with free shipping. I have a rule I’ve been following for a while now, I will not spend more than $20 for a lure of any kind. I don’t care how big of a fish it will supposedly catch me.

Megabass Big Gabot

Out of the package, I am going to say this frog looks and feels awesome. In typical Megabass fashion, they went over the top with the design of this one. These are just my initial thoughts, as I have not fished this frog yet.

These frogs are just plain sexy. This particular color is called the MB Gizzard. The Megabass Big Gabot is 3-inches long and weighs in at 3/4 of an ounce. There is some meat to this frog, which will allow for bullet casts. There are some key details that I want to point out that I think will make the Gabot a winner.

Catamaran Mouth

Let’s just start at the top. This is what I see as the reason why the Megabass Big Gabot will be a winner. The catamaran mouth as it’s called is an open mouth design that allows for “irresistible, airy popping sounds to attract fish”. Ok sure, I’ll buy the marketing hype.

What I like about the mouth is that the eyelet is sealed with what looks like hand-tied thread, like a jig skirt. This will help eliminate any water coming into the frog. Also, the hook and the eyelet are not a single unit. There is some play when pulling on the eye while holding the hook.

Original Hook

Megabass touts the original hook as being custom-designed for the Big Gabot. The hook bend, angle, and wire diameter are optimized for hook-up ration & power in heavy cover applications. To me, it looks like a normal hollow body frog hook. The hooks are sharp though, trust me on this.

Tail Skirt

The tail skirt on the Megabass Big Gabot has a cool design to it. You can replace it, that’s about all there is to it. Megabass decided to mention it on their website and even on the packaging. The tail skirt is “Rear mounted” to support balanced walking action & life-like surface movement. Sure, sounds good. I’m sure the big weight at the back of the frog has something to do with balance and movement as well, but I’m no expert.
