Mexico Bass Fishing at Lake Baccarac: The Final Report

Well, it’s a wrap. This will be the final report for Mexico Bass Fishing at Lake Baccarac. This was just an awesome trip. I had such a good time and experience, that I’ve already penciled in my return for next year. Yes, it was that good. My only complaint about this trip is the return home. It’s just sad leaving such a beautiful fishery.

Travel

There are no direct flights to Culiacan from Boston. Getting there and returning home is a full day affair even without running into any issues. My flight took me from Boston to Atlanta, Atlanta to Mexico City, and then from Mexico City to Culiacan. Transportation was waiting for us at the airport to take us to the lodge which was roughly 2.5 hours away. The trip was so awesome, that I don’t care how long it takes to get there and back. I heard there are direct flights from the States that will allow us to bypass Mexico City altogether. I will explore those options next time.

The Lodge

The Pro Bass Adventures lodge is awesome. Our room had two beds, a bathroom and shower, and plenty of room for our clothes and gear. There is an outdoor covered area for dining where the group would meet every morning before we went fishing, at lunch, and then at dinner before calling it a night. A truly perfect setting for relaxing, socializing with other folks, and fishing. Can you say awesome?

Now, if you know me, you know (and can probably see) that I am a foodie. I like food. No, let me take that back, I love food. I was told the food was good, and they were not kidding. Everyday breakfast consisted of fresh fruit and granola, bacon, eggs, and toast the way you wanted it, and fresh orange juice and coffee. Lunch and dinner consisted of a Mexican inspired dish. Every day there was something different on the menu. There was plenty of delicious fresh salsa and chips to go around, and there were unlimited drink options that included, beer, wine, soda, water, and mixed drinks. I myself took a liking to Pacifico Beer.

Below is a picture of the dining area. To the right of the bar is a fully stocked refrigerator. There was a big flat-screen TV running the Outdoor Channel……how fitting!

One night Doug King (The owner of Pro Bass Adventures) held a pig roast for us. It was off the hook! It was really cool to speak and hang out with Doug. He’s down to earth and truly tried to make this an experience of a lifetime for our group. Doug stayed with our group the whole week and gave us tips and insights. It was just awesome.

Lake Baccarac

I can honestly say this was the most beautiful lake I have ever been on. It is not built up and while fishing you could hear cows and goats as they free-ranged the land and steep sides.

The Fishing

Where do I begin? My goal for this trip to Mexico was to catch a bass over 10 pounds. My biggest official bass to date weighed 5.12. That was shattered in the first 30 minutes with a bass that went 7.15 on a 5-inch Tacklehead Real Swimmer with an Owner Flashy Swimmer. The Tacklehead Real Swimmer is the real deal, it swims awesome and they are really durable. I was probably getting a dozen fish on each one if not more. A video review on the Real Swimmer will be out shortly.

The second bait that I had real god luck on was the Umbrella Rig. Not just any Umbrella Rig, but a Tater Baits Umbrella Rig. I only brought these Tater Rigs to Mexico on a last-minute decision. I had some room so I threw four of them in my bag. What a great choice. My boy Tammer got his first 10-pounder on the Tater Rig, and between the both of us we must have caught close to two dozen big bass on them. They really held up. For sure they will be part of my arsenal next time. For $12.5o per bait, I highly suggest if you want to try Alabama Rigs, go with Tater Baits.

I ended up rigging my Tater Rigs, with a combination of Keitech Tungsten Super Round Jig Heads, Matt Allen Jig heads, and 4.8 Keitech Fat Swing Impact Swimbaits.

My Biggest Bass

My two biggest bass which weighed in at 8.13 and 8.6 were caught in deep water throwing 3/4 ounce Swing Jigs with 6-inch Z-man Giant TRD Worm which were actually given to me by Tammer. For the life of me, I can’t remember the color, but it was either the Canada Craw or the California Craw. I am leaning towards the Canada Craw…eh!

I boated over 70 fish and lost over 50 with missed hooksets or them coming off at the boat. At one point I hooked up with a MONSTER that broke my Keitech hook, but we will save that as an old campfire fishing tale. I stopped taking pictures of fish under five pounds, but I can tell you I caught dozens of fish in the 5-7 pound range. Totally Insane! Pictured below is Tammer’s 10.15 and my 8.13. These monster bass were caught on the last cast on the last night. Is there a better way to end the trip?

Final Thoughts

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this trip. I met some very cool people, fished a beautiful trophy bass fishery, and enhanced my fishing skills ten-fold. Some things that I really liked included coffee delivery at the door at 5 AM. I also loved the laundry service. All you had to do was leave the clothes you wanted to be washed on your bed when you left in the morning to go fishing. Upon return at lunch, your laundry was waiting for you back on your bed, washed and folded. The cost of the service was only $1 per garment. This was a no-brainer, I am only bringing three days of clothing next time. Lastly, there was wifi cell coverage at the lodge, but no service on the lake. This did not bother me at all as I truly disconnected while down there.
