East Brimfield Lake

We ventured off to East Brimfield Lake in Brimfield, Massachusetts for a day of fishing and boating. We picked a perfect day to go out on and do this. I have never been to this lake before but promised myself I would get to it this year after passing by going to the really popular Brimfield Antique Flea Market. The lake is right on Route 20 and so is the Long Pond boat launch. The paved boat ramp and is in awesome condition but there is only room to launch one boat at a time. Kayakers can easily offload their kayaks to the right of this ramp. There was plenty of parking for the trailers and a bonus portable restroom. The whole boat launch area was clean and well maintained.

The Lake

One very cool thing about East Brimfield Lake is that there is a Life Jacket Loaner Station. If someone forgets to bring a life jacket, they can borrow one for the day and then return it. It was nice to see that there were jackets available.

On the Water

What is commonly called the East Brimfield Reservoir actually consists of two bodies of water, Long Pond and East Brimfield Lake. The two bodies of water are joined together via a bridge underpass that is right on Route 20. The bridge is wide enough for a big boat to pass through.

The total surface area of both bodies of water is 420 acres. Long pond is roughly 106 acres and East Brimfield Lake is 314 acres. Information I found online says the max depth is 22 feet with an average of 10 feet.

By August this lake is full of weeds and coon tails, I mean every single edge around this lake was full of weeds and coon tails.

This body of water is a topwater frog fishing paradise. Lily pads are everywhere on this lake. I’m sure plenty of bass have been fooled here over the years by plastic frogs.

We spent about 3 hours on this lake and the fishing was slow. I spoke to a couple of kayakers, and two different boaters and both said the same thing. We did see one of the kayakers catch a bass in the center of the lake in about 10 feet of water. It looked like it was a 2 pounder and it came up in a pile of salad. It looked like he was fishing a creature bait rigged Texas-style. Out of respect, we kept our distance from where they were fishing. We plan to go back in the late fall and hit some other sections of this lake. Stay tuned for a better report.
