Well, well, well, what do we got going on over here? Nothing really, just my first look at the DOOMSDAY D-Hop 75 frog from Doomsday Tackle. If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with topwater frog fishing. I didn’t say I was good at it, but I will say it is an exciting way to fish for bass. The thrill of having a fish blow up the surface of the water and inhale your bait cannot be beaten.

What makes this frog so special? For me, it’s that it’s not a hollow body frog. It’s made from something called Dura Foam™. The D-Hop 75 is a solid foam frog. No more water filled frogs, no more hooks piercing the bait and making the bait completely useless. This frog does not come with a hook. You read that correctly. This is a bring your own hook bait, which is fine by me. Doomsday Tackle recommends a 6/0 Super Line EWG hook, and I have plenty of those. I could go into all the details about the bait, but why not read it right from Doomsday Tackle’s website.
The new Doomsday D-Hop 75 is the culmination of the evolution of topwater plastics. Made from Dura Foam™, this bait is soft, pliable, durable and has such a low density that it will float any hook you decide to place in it. The D-Hop 75 fixes all current issues with current top water frogs on the market. The D-Hop 75 will never fill with water. The D-Hop 75 rigged with a 6/0 Super Line EWG hook will increase hook up ratio by as much as 80%. The nature of the bait, when rigged with a single hook, allows the bait to slide up the line like your average worm would. This feature does not allow the fish to have leverage to throw the bait when it jumps out of the water.
The D-Hop 75 is also just as durable as any other hollow bodied frog on the market. No need to be afraid that this bait will tear. The Skirts can be removed and personalized to fit the anglers need. There is even a small hole in the back of the bait to allow the angler to add split shot or nail weights to adjust the angel of which the bait floats on the surface. Below is a side shot of the Doomsday D-Hop 75. If you really wanted to, you could customize this any way you wanted. You could shorten the skirts, or you could even change them to the color of your choice. Some people have confidence in certain colors, I’m not one of them. Maybe I should be.
The top of the D-Hop 75 has a channel to bury the hook point, making this bait totally weedless which is obviously what you want.
Below is a belly shot of the D-hop 75. Doomsday Tackle recommends a 6/0 Super Line EWG hook. They claim an 80% hook up ratio. For me, that’s like a miracle. I could easily make a solid video of missed frog hook sets. I bet I can’t be beaten in misses.
Did you happen to notice the hole towards the bottom of the bait? You can insert a split-shot weight or a nail weight to adjust the way the frog sits in the water. If your fishing lily pads and are able to get the lure in into open spots, I can see an advantage of the rear sitting below the surface just a little.
Final Thoughts
Is the Doomsday D-hop 75 a game changer? I hate wasting money on fragile hollow body frogs that don’t last a long time. I did my research and even looked up some youtube videos of people who have “tested” the lure. I’m calling BS on those, as you can’t just go out one time and make a video and give your opinion. You need to dedicate some time with this lure, use it over multiple sessions, then formulate an opinion. That is what I plan to do, and that is what two lucky readers of our website are going to do. I picked up five of them at the Doomsday Tackle booth at the Connecticut Outdoor Expo.
My plan is to keep and lose three of them and give two away to folks who are willing to test this bait for the site. These Frogs retail for $5.99 which is a great price point.
